Since the beginning of this outbreak in November 2024:
- Botswana: a total of 2’129 cases have been confirmed from 24 of 27 districts, including 3% imported cases.
- Namibia: according to African CDC, a total of 70’055 cases have been confirmed including 122 deaths and 18% imported cases. This is an increase of around 50’000 cases since the end of March 2025. Especially the northern and northeastern provinces are affected including Zambezi, Kavango East and West, Ohangwena, Omusati, and Oshikoto. According to the World Malaria Report 2024, the number of locally transmitted malaria cases ranged between 10’000 and 13’000 annually from 2020 to 2023.
In addition to optimal mosquito bite prevention measures, chemoprophylaxis against malaria is recommended in some regions of Botswana and Namibia, see respective country page at www.healthytravel.ch.
New: Mosquito bite prevention is also recommended for stays only in the city Gabarone (no longer malaria free!)
