The number of malaria cases among airport workers at the Frankfurt Airport has increased to six cases: Five cases developed symptoms in early July and one in mid-August 2026. Two died - one in July, with malaria diagnosed post-mortem, and one in August - while the remaining four have recovered. All cases involved airport personnel working in administration, technical operations, or cargo/aircraft handling with no travel history to malaria-endemic area.
Investigations are ongoing. The presumed source of infection is one or more Anopheles mosquitoes imported aboard an aircraft arriving from a malaria-endemic region.
Airport-associated malaria is rare.
In febrile patients working at an airport, malaria should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Taking an occupational history is crucial, as prompt diagnosis and treatment can be lifesaving.
