Dengue cases in Ecuador reach 38’607 in 2026, an 11.57% increase over the same period in 2025
Manabí reported 11’137 cases, followed by Guayas with 9134 and Los Ríos with 4347. Together, these provinces accounted for 63.76% of the national total. The highest reported cumulative incidence was in Galápagos, at 2069 cases per 100’000 population, followed by Manabí at 643, Napo at 540, and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas at 535.
Reported deaths and the crude case fatality ratio have declined, while ongoing transmission underscores the importance of vector control, timely clinical care, and monitoring for severe disease.
Prevention: Optimal protection against mosquitoes 24/7, including against other mosquito-borne diseases.
Vaccination: The Swiss Committee of Experts in Travel Medicine (ECTM) recommends vaccination with Qdenga® only for travellers over 4 years of age who have already contracted dengue; see the ECTM SOP dengue vaccination available on the PRO version of www.healthytravel.ch.
In case of fever:
- Malaria should be ruled out.
- Make sure you hydrate enough and take paracetamol medication to relieve symptoms.
- Avoid taking medications containing acetylsalicylic acid (e.g., aspirin®), as this can increase the risk of bleeding in the event of a dengue infection. However, do not stop taking medications containing acetylsalicylic acid if they are already part of your regular treatment for an underlying condition.
