According to media reports citing local health authorities, 259 chikungunya cases have been reported since early June 2026 across three municipalities in Samar Province: Basey (159 cases), Gandara (97 cases), and Paranas (3 cases). The first recognized case in Gandara was detected in May 2026, followed by a marked increase in cases from June onwards. Although the outbreak remains geographically localized, it represents a substantial cluster at the municipal level, prompting intensified surveillance and vector control measures to prevent further spread.
Philippines is considered a country with an elevated risk of chikungunya transmission, and Samar Province should be considered as an outbreak area.
Prevention: Optimal protection against mosquitos 24/7, including against other mosquito-borne diseases. For vaccination recommendations against chikungunya, see ECTM statement.
In case of fever: Ensure adequate hydration and apply paracetamol products.
