Health authorities are investigating a community cluster of Legionnaires' disease in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. As of 7 July 2026, 28 cases and 21 hospitalizations have been reported, with no deaths.
Legionella multiply especially in hot water systems, humidifiers, cooling towers, whirlpools and hydrotherapeutic facilities at water temperatures below 50°C. For the disease, see ECDC LINK.
Residents and visitors to the affected area since late June who develop fever, cough, or difficulty breathing are advised to seek medical attention promptly.
Particularly at risk of severe illness are people older than 50, smokers, people with chronic lung disease diabetes, or weakened immune system such as transplant recipients and tumor patients.
