Brazil: Contaminated alcohol
According to Brazil’s Ministry of Health, over 180 suspected cases of methanol poisoning — including 16 confirmed cases and 2 deaths — have been reported across the country since 1 October 2025, with most occurring in São Paulo State (>150 cases). The true extent of the outbreak is likely underestimated, as additional cases may not yet have been recognized.
Nepal: Scrub typhus outbreak
According to media, in recent weeks, the Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital (STIDH) laboratory has detected dozens of scrub typhus-positive cases daily among febrile patients in Kathmandu, indicating a rare but rapidly emerging outbreak.
Scrub typhus (also called Tsutsugamushi fever) is transmitted to humans by chigger mite larvae. The disease occurs in clusters at the end of the rainy season. Orientia tsutsugamushi is classified as a rickettsial disease. After an incubation period of 6-21 days, a typical blackish skin lesion (eschar) may appear, as well as fever, headache and muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes and sometimes an exanthema. Antibiotic treatment (doxycycline) should be started as soon as Scrub typhus is suspected in order to avoid possible neurological (encephalitis) and cardiac complications, which can be fatal.
Germany: Highest number of syphilis cases in 2024
- Germany reported 9‘519 syphilis cases in 2024, the highest number since mandatory notification began in 2001, marking a 3.9% increase from 9‘159 cases in 2023.
- The national incidence was 11.2 per 100 000, with significant regional differences. The highest rates were reported in Berlin (35.7) and Hamburg (30.3), while Brandenburg (4.5) and Thüringen (6.6) had the lowest.
- Men accounted for the majority of infections, with women comprising about 7.6% of cases. Men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to be the most affected group, although heterosexual transmission showed a slight rise.
- The average age of cases was 41 years.
Worldwide: World Rabies Day - “Act Now: You, Me, Community”
Rabies is still a serious public health problem in more than 150 countries, mainly in Asia and Africa, causing tens of thousands of deaths each year.
Despite dog vaccination efforts, many people are still bitten by unvaccinated dogs. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is crucial, as 99% of human rabies deaths are dog-mediated, yet access and cost barriers leave many bite victims at risk of death from a preventable disease.
Access to PEP is limited in many countries, especially for rabies immunoglobulins (RIG). According to a publication, out of 240 countries, access to RIG was limited in 134, while 70 countries had no access at all. For details, see JTM publication, 2022.

Bolivia: Monkey dies of yellow fever in Coroico, northern La Paz department
The La Paz Departmental Health Service (SEDES) confirmed the presence of yellow fever virus in a dead monkey within an ecological reserve in the municipality of Coroico, marking the first time rabies has been reported in this region.
The virus now appears to be near an urban area; Coroico is less than two hours from La Paz, which increases the risk of the virus reaching a major population.
In South America, deaths in monkeys frequently precede human cases of yellow fever and thus serve as an indicator of increased yellow fever virus circulation.
Ecuador: Lifting of YF entry requirements
Ecuador has lifted the requirement for yellow fever vaccination.
France: Fatal human rabies case reported in Occitanie
In September 2025, a fatal case of rabies was confirmed in a 25-year-old man from Algeria in Perpignan, Occitanie. Investigations are currently underway to determine the source of infection. According to media reports, the patient had travelled to the Maghreb.
China: Chikungunya outbreak in the Guangdong Province – update 19 Sep 2025
As of 19 September 2025, Jiangmen in Guangdong Province has reported a total of 1714 confirmed cases of chikungunya fever since the first case was detected in the city on 16 Jul 2025.
The outbreak prompted activation of a Level III local public health emergency response, focusing on coordinated command, region-wide vector control, and the mobilization of medical resources.
The situation in Jiangmen occurs in the context of China’s largest-ever chikungunya outbreak in Guangdong Province, with Foshan as the epicenter (over 8000 cases reported by mid-to-late August 2025). While case numbers from Foshan have since decreased, the increase in Jiangmen highlights the ongoing risk of further spread in the region.
Indonesia: Surge in rabies risk
On 21 Sep 2025, 15 hikers were bitten by a stray dog suspected of having rabies while climbing Mount Batukaru in Tabanan Regency, Bali province. All 15 victims received medical care, including wound cleaning and anti-rabies vaccine administration; some reportedly also received anti-rabies serum.
The suspected dog was captured and euthanized, and laboratory testing of the animal’s brain is in progress to confirm rabies infection.
In 2025, rabies cases have surged in Bali, Indonesia, particularly affecting popular tourist areas like South Kuta and Mengwi District.
