As of 30 July 2026, Sri Lanka reported 84’724 dengue cases and 62 deaths in 2026, with a case fatality rate of 0.07%. July recorded the highest monthly case count (29’350 cases), accounting for more than one-third of the annual total, following a surge from 21’553 cases in June.
In epidemiological week 29, reported cases declined slightly to 7’385 from 7’619 the previous week. The number of high-risk health areas increased to 175, while average daily dengue hospitalizations remained high at 2’391 patients across sentinel hospitals.
Gampaha and Colombo districts reported the highest case numbers, with Gampaha, Colombo, and Kalutara together accounting for nearly half of all national cases.
Prevention: Optimal protection against mosquitoes 24/7, including against other mosquito-borne diseases.
Vaccination: The Swiss Committee of Experts in Travel Medicine (ECTM/CEMV) recommends vaccination with Qdenga® only for travellers over 4 years of age who have already contracted dengue; see the position paper of the ECTM.
In case of fever:
- Make sure you hydrate enough and take paracetamol medication to relieve symptoms.
- Avoid taking medications containing acetylsalicylic acid (e.g., aspirin®), as this can increase the risk of bleeding in the event of a dengue infection. However, do not stop taking medications containing acetylsalicylic acid if they are already part of your regular treatment for an underlying condition.
